Job purpose
To lead the strategic development of Nottingham University Business School in Malaysia. Within the context of the overall strategic plan, to enhance, develop and progress the international profile of the School as a leading provider of undergraduate, postgraduate and post-experience education. To develop policies to support the School’s ambitions to become a centre for innovative world-class research.

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. To take responsibility for the strategic development of Nottingham University Business School in Malaysia.
  2. To develop strategies that will enable the Business School to operate as a leader in the provision of a full range of undergraduate, postgraduate and executive education programmes in Malaysia.
  3. To contribute to the strategic planning and development of Nottingham University Business School as a truly international Business School, in collaboration with the Director of Nottingham University Business School and the Director of Nottingham University Business School (China).
  4. To contribute to the growth and development of the University in Malaysia.
  5. To develop and enhance the profile of the School as a leading provider of regionally, nationally and internationally recognised research.
  6. To identify and establish productive and sustainable links with potential partners regionally, nationally and worldwide, promoting Malaysia as an integral part of Nottingham University Business School and immersed in the regional business community.
  7. To provide leadership and inspire the engagement of academic staff in the development, delivery and review of teaching and research. Where necessary, facilitate a change of activity/curriculum in those areas where the market identifies scope for change and expansion.
  8. To enhance and ensure the quality of the student experience and the implementation of policy and procedures relating to student admissions and access.
  9. To deploy the human, financial and physical resources necessary to deliver a sustainable world class business school and drive performance in line with agreed targets for growth.
  10. To represent the Business School and University in the wider community, as appropriate.
  11. To foster effective relationships and exploit synergies with senior colleagues in the Business School in the UK and Malaysia.
  12. Ensure that corporate relationships and links across the University campus in Malaysia are developed and managed in an integrated fashion.
  13. To undertake teaching, research, research supervision and tutorials.
  14. Such other duties, temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may reasonably be required, commensurate with the level of the appointment.

* Appointment to this Professorial position will require a record of excellence in teaching and research including a distinguished publication record, evidence of collaborative research and continued development of an international reputation as a research leader in a major subject area.


Person Specification

Director of Nottingham University Business School, Malaysia

  1. Evidence of significant academic achievement in teaching and research in an area related to business and management.
  2. Experience of leading and developing a large team in a complex organisation.
  3. A high level of external/internal credibility and the ability to utilise this to raise the external profile of the School effectively.
  4. Evidence of high levels of motivation and the personal drive necessary to provide leadership, vision and strategic direction to staff and partners.
  5. Senior experience of successful delivery of operational plans and of achieving financial targets in an academic or relevant environment.
  6. Experience of undertaking administrative/managerial responsibilities within a Business School, particularly in the management of academic programmes and student recruitment.
  7. Evidence of ability to establish and develop effective international, national and/or regional networks related to teaching and/or research.
  8. A good understanding of the interface between academic and business communities, including an appreciation of the opportunities for the globalisation of education and research.
  9. Empathy with staff and students from many different cultures and a strong commitment to working in a multi-cultural environment.
  10. A substantial record of achievement in the publication of research in leading academic journals and the supervision of research students.
  11. Success in securing research funding and in undertaking and managing major research projects.
  12. Excellent communication and presentation skills and experience of teaching relevant subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level in an internationally recognised English-speaking institution.
  13. A PhD or DBA in a business related subject area.
