The University of Nottingham in Malaysia
The development of the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus is a fundamental part of the University’s vision to become a truly global university for the 21st century and beyond. It was the first ever branch campus of a UK University abroad, earning the University the distinction of the Queen's Award for Enterprise in the field of international achievement – the first award of its kind to an academic institution.
When the University was named as the 'UK University of the Year' in the Times Higher Awards 2006, the judges particularly praised Nottingham’s pioneering campuses in China and Malaysia and its outstanding performance in international Higher Education in 2006. Baroness Helena Kennedy, one of the distinguished judges of the awards, said "This is about Nottingham being really bold. It is about looking to the future and Nottingham saying it wants to have a relationship of substance with those parts of the world. I am sure that the campuses will reap huge rewards for Nottingham."
The first students were admitted to the Malaysia Campus in September 2000 when courses in Business and Management, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Computer Science and IT were offered.
The Malaysia Campus moved to its new purpose-built campus on a 101 acre site near Semenyih, 35km south of Kuala Lumpur city centre in August 2005. The campus has been designed to reflect the attributes of University Park Campus in Nottingham and occupies a scenic position (surrounded by) green hills. The “Semenyih Campus” was officially opened in September 2005 and teaching also started there in September 2005. The campus provides a high quality living environment for students, with 1200 beds in Halls of Residences, in addition to state-of–the-art teaching and learning facilities. The campus currently supports approximately 3,500 students and 211 academic staff. Since 2003 a range of courses have been added to the initial portfolio, these include; Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Pharmacy, Biosciences, Education, Applied Psychology (I-WHO), Psychology, International Communication Studies and Postgraduate Law. 2010 will see the introduction of programmes in Economics, International Relations and English Language Studies. In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses the campus offers a range of Foundation courses as well as MPhil and PhD research degrees; currently approximately 200 students are registered for research degrees.
In addition to the campus at Semenyih the Malaysia Campus has a teaching facility in the centre of Kuala Lumpur which is used mainly for ‘executive’ postgraduate courses, taught in the evenings and at weekends.
